The first scientific strategy to living happier and healthier is to improve our diet Food is the fuel that helps our body to function and what we eat has a huge impact on how we feel So how can we improve our diet? Well, everything we eat is made up of carbohydrates, proteins and fats Now there are bad carbohydrates like processed foods and sugary drinks which are gonna mess with our blood sugar, reducing our energy levels and increasing our risk of diabetes But there’s also good carbohydrates like fruits, vegetables and grains not only is that going to stabilise our blood sugar but it’s also gonna offer essential vitamins and minerals that our bodies really need There’s also bad saturated fats, which you’re gonna find in chips, pastries and animal products These can cause cholesterol to deposit in your blood vessels, which is really bad for your heart Meanwhile, good unsaturated fats found in nuts, virgin olive oil and avocados not only remove bad cholesterol from our bloodstreams but they also offer omega fatty acids, which are really good for our brain function There is no bad type of protein but it’s easy to forget protein in your diet Protein makes up a lot of our body including our hair and our fingernails so make sure that you have a good source of protein somewhere in your diet Finally, Serotonin is a feel-good hormone and a lot of people don’t realise that most of our serotonin is actually produced in our gut so if we feed our gut lots of good food, it’s going to produce lots of that feel-good hormone and we’re gonna be really happy! So make sure that you have a balanced diet maximising those good carbohydrates, proteins and fats while minimising the bad fats and carbohydrates This is going to lead to better brain and gut function a healthier heart, increased energy
