Making of the Clue: Hunger Games Edition Board Game

Making of the Clue: Hunger Games Edition Board Game

(“In the Hunger Games” by Alex Carpenter) ♫ You could be Katniss, I could be Peeta ♫ Waiting for a cannon,
midnight in the arena, now ♫ – Hey everyone, my name is Karen Kavett and you may have seen a
few, like a year ago now, I made a Dr. Who Guess Who board game set. And with the Catching
Fire Hunger Games Movie coming out soon, I
wanted to do another one like that, only about Catching Fire. So I decided to modify one
of my favorite games, Clue. I went on ebay and I bought
the version from the 90s that I grew up on, so let’s take this and let’s make it Hunger Games. OK, so I set up most of the files on my computer already, so now I’m going to pray to the printer
gods that I have enough color ink left over so that
I can print everything. I’m going to print it on Epson
Premium Presentation Paper, which on the Epson printer,
this is not sponsored by Epson or anything, this
is just my favorite paper in the world, so if it all works out, the colors are going to be beautiful. So let’s just all cross our fingers that it all works out. ♫ In the Hunger Games ♫ We could be the
Tributes from District 12 ♫ Nothing I would do would
be to save myself, now ♫ OK, so it’s a few hours later. The printer gods did
not answer my prayers. I just had to go out and
buy more ink cartridges. They were really expensive, but hopefully they’ll last me for a little while longer, at least until the end of this project. So I’m going to go ahead and finish printing everything out now. ♫ Hunger Games ♫ You’ll never have to
bury Rue alone again ♫ OK, so now it is the next day. I have all of my sheets
ready to be cut out, so let’s get started. ♫ Take the world, take the
stage, just take my hand ♫ Well it’s fun to know we have our cards and our case files to keep track of Tributes and weapons
and all of that fun stuff. So now it is time to
glue all of these pieces of the board onto the Clue board. I only have one chance to get this right, so I hope it works out. Let’s see how it goes. (guitar music) So obviously the best part of Clue is getting to play with
the cute little weapons, but unfortunately the weapons
in the normal game of Clue aren’t exactly the same
weapons that they use in the Hunger Games. So I got these WarLord figurines I think you use in role playing games and stuff like that. These cute little miniatures,
and I’m going to use my metal cutters to cut them up and then we can have our proper weapons. (guitar music) ♫ We were just children,
there was little I could do ♫ It’s gonna take more than
bread for me to save you, now ♫ So there we go, now we
have a bow and arrow, a dagger, a mace, a
sword, a throwing knife, and a fishing spear/trident sort of thing. Some of them still have tiny little hands attached to them, but I
couldn’t really do anything about that, so we’ll just
have to live with it. I was actually kinda
worried that the metal would be harder to cut than it was, but it was actually really soft and really easy to do. I’m glad I thought to just
get little figurines like that because that was really easy. So now I’m going to use my macro lens to take some pictures of these weapons, and then insert them
into the weapons cards. And then I’ll print those out and then I’m gonna be
so close to being done. OK, so I have done that,
and I actually decided to print out all of the cards again, because before I tried
to do a back on them but it didn’t quite line
up, so a lot of them have this weird white border on top, and also the white text I thought
was a little hard to read. So, I got rid of the background and I changed the text to a darker color so it’s easier to read. I have a lot more cutting to do. I’m getting a lot of use out
of my X-Acto knife today. (guitar music) ♫ In the Hunger Games ♫ You could nurse me to
health until I was fine ♫ We could eat those ber–♫ So there we go, now we have our full set of character cards, weapons cards, and the places on the Arena. So the next step is going to be to make little character pieces. In the original game they
were these little guys, trophies of the different
colors for the characters, but our characters do not
have colors in their names, so instead I printed
out tiny little pictures of them that I am going
to cut out and mount onto illustration board to
make tiny little game pieces. And then, pretty much the
last thing I have to make for the game itself is
the case file envelope. So I opened this up so I can trace it, and then I made a custom
Capitol Confidential thing, so I’m gonna make an envelope out of this. Let’s do it. ♫ The exact same time, now ♫ In the Hunger Games ♫ You’ll never have to
bury Rue alone again ♫ Take the world, take the
stage, just take my hand ♫ Katniss, you know that I love you ♫ I have since our eyes first met ♫ You know we’re meant to be together ♫ Each moment with you is the best one yet ♫ I just sleep better with
your head upon my shoulder ♫ And this love letter ♫ Is televised for all the world to see ♫ OK, so I just had a little bit of a scare where my camera would not turn on, but it looks like obviously
it’s working again now. During that time I finished
making the game pieces and I moved all of my camera equipment off of my desk onto my bed, so that on my desk we have the game. It’s real, it exists, there it is. So if we zoom in here, we can see how the game pieces came out. I just glued the picture onto each side and then I hot glued it onto
a little square of card stock. It’s actually the only
time I’ve used hot glue so far in this whole
project, which is weird. Because usually everything I
make is made out of hot glue. And then I grabbed the
die from my Munchkin Game, in which I have like a
million-zillion cards and no one ever wants to play, and so I can borrow the
dice for a little bit. And yeah, and now we
have a game, there it is. So I’m going to take
a couple nice pictures of this here for the box design, and then I’m gonna go finish Photoshopping the box design and print that out. And then that’s the last thing and then we will be all done. So I’m kind of really
excited to finish this. I wasn’t sure if I would get it done in time for the movie,
and hopefully I’ll have all of this edited, at
least in time for the movie. So cool, let’s go do it. OK, it is a few hours later
and I have just finished designing the box, so now
I’m going to just have to hope and pray that my
printer actually decides to print it so that I
can finish this thing once and for all and have it be done and be a thing in the world. So let’s see if it’s gonna print. ♫ It’s for you to make it through this ♫ And when we’re kissing ♫ I know that my sacrifice
will be worthwhile. ♫ Katniss, You know that I love you ♫ Let me hear you sing one last time ♫ If for just a mo– ♫ OK, finally it is done. Here it is, here’s the box. There is one typo on the box, but I’m not gonna tell you what it is, and I’m gonna do my best not to show it in any of the photos or video. Cause I really don’t wanna print out and glue this whole thing again. I basically spent all day on this, all of my memory cards are full, my computer hard drive is full, my room is a total mess, but it’s done and I’m so happy I got it done. You know, with everything
else I have going on this was a completely
self-motivated project. I just really wanted to do it and I did it, and now
it exists in the world. And I’m so happy that it does. So, just like last time with
the Dr. Who Guess Who set, I’m gonna put all of
these files on my blogs so you can download all of the cards and all of the board
design and everything. You can print out everything for yourself so you can make one, too. I would love to see photos
if you decide to make one. Feel free to Tweet them
to me @karenkavett or send them to me on Tumblr @karenkavett or Instagram @karenkavett,
I get very creative with user names, all of those
links will be down below. But if you’re new to my
channel, welcome, hello, I hope you stick around,
I hope you hit subscribe because I do cool fun,
nerdy, designy things like this all the time and I
would love to have you along. So now that it’s done I’m going to go back to having a life, a.k.a.
taking the night off. And then coming back and
doing all of the actual photos and professional videos and Photoshopping and editing tomorrow, but yeah. Thank you guys so much for watching. If you missed the commercial
you can watch that right here. If you really liked
this and you want to see the Dr. Who Guess Who making of, you can watch that video right here. Thank you guys so much. Let me know in the comments,

I want you to tell me, tell me anything, who’s you favorite Hunger Games characters, that’s a comment. Leave a comment. OK, I’m gonna go now, so
thank you for watching. Bye guys! ♫ In the Hunger Games ♫ You’ll never have to
bury Rue alone again ♫ Take the world, take the
stage, just take my hand ♫

  1. This is so clever and creative. I loved watching you put everything together. It was fascinating and inspirational! Thank you for sharing it with us. โ™ฅ

  2. To answer your question my favorite character is probably Cinna. Or Peeta. I love a lot of the characters though. This looks incredible, Karen! Looks even cooler than Guess Who did and that one was incredible. ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚

  3. This is awesome, I never would have though about Catching Fire turning into a version of Clue. I love the design work, very nice and clean.

As for your question, Finnick's my favourite character.

  4. Haha love the "the board gluing was successful!" ๐Ÿ™‚ maybe you could have printed the cards on thicker cardstock (if your printer could cope) and rounded the edges so they looked more like playing cards and not printouts, or used that sticky plastic wrap stuff to make them look glossy; either way, this is really cool, love the graphic work

  5. Karen – I modified Monopoly to make Sherlock Monopoly, with inspiration and motivation from your Dr. Who Guess Who game. Thanks for the inspiration! I was so excited to see this ๐Ÿ™‚ Though I wish I had seen it before I made Sherlockopoly because it gave me so many ideas for how I could have executed things better

  6. You are like my long-long sister ๐Ÿ˜€ We both have the motivation and the energy to do these kind of projects ๐Ÿ˜€ Yours turned out amazing and I want to do this soon ๐Ÿ˜€ I guess my favorite characters are: Cecelia, Cashmere, Gloss, Brutus, Enobaria, Mags, Woof and Finnick ๐Ÿ˜€ย

  7. AH. You repeated the oh-so-sad "You'll never have to bury rue alone again" part of that song at least 4 times in this video. The feels!

  8. I would love to watch a video of you designing this in photoshop. I don't suppose you recorded any of that? The finished product looks amazing.

  9. I've only read THG but not Catching fire or Mockingjay, but Rue is definitely my favorite character.
Also, I will play Munchkin with you!!! I've only played it once but it's the best game ever and I know someone who would also want to play it. Can we please be best friends and play Munchkin and be nerdy together?!

  10. Awesome! It looks really cool. My only worry is about game play. Pie slices with square movement spaces don't quite mesh at the edges. Also, there's other characters I'd like to see, but I'm sure it wouldn't be too hard to mod it if I ever have the time to make this.

  11. Looks awesome! Tip for anyone looking to print their own but doesn't have a printer: Libraries often have awesome printers, are way cheaper than print shops, and if you go on a quiet weekday evening and ask super nicely, they might let you use your own paper.

  12. Could you do a tutorial on how to recreate board games because I really want to make a fairy tale monopoly. I've thought of all the places I just don't know how to make it.

  13. This is really awesome. I love clue and the Hunger Games. But why are there only 8 sections? That completely ruins the integrity of the arena!

  14. I'd love it if you made your own version of the DIY mason jar tumblers! ย I feel life you could come up with something super fantastic… I might make some myself for my friends this Christmas!

  15. @Sarah H, I can't reply to your comment, but I hope you'll see this.
There are probably two reasons why there are only 8 sections and not 12 like in the book and the movie:
1.) If you look at the pictures you see, that the 8 sections are quite small. If you would made 12 of them, they would be even smaller… so the game play would not be as nice.
2.) We only know what happens in 8 of the 12 sections. The horrors in the other 4 are never revealed. So if there would be 12 sections on this game board, Karen would have had to made up what's in them…

  16. wow your channel is amazing. I'm take graphic design at school and I do a lot of craft at home sometimes and I'm so glad I came cross your channel because your creations are so unique and your videos are really useful

  17. Hey, are you stupid? Finnick is of the District 4 and Beetee is of the District 3…
The game is awesome but you have a equivocation

  18. – Ah, no. We are never playing that again.
    – Why not?
    – Because it's not actually possible for the victim to have done it, Sherlock, that's why!
    – It was the only possible solution!

    Sorry, wrong fandom

  19. You should definitely make more of these board games.

James Bond scrabble or Hannibal Candy Land. Supernatural Game of Life.

  20. Hey Karen, it's sooooo awesome! I've just downloaded the template and I have just one question for you. I'm brazillian I would love to do this for a friend that is more crazy for THG than myself, and I wonder if you let me do some modifications in the game, like translate it and maybe change some images (like the monkeys, I mean, we had truly freaked out with the movie ones). And then, if it work out, share the translated version.

  21. For the hands stuck on the weapons, just say that the weapons are new from the Capitol and prototypes; they each can only be used by one tribute only.

  22. We have a game shop inn Box Elder SD. I wish everyone would watch this as people keep asking for us to get it for them in the store as stock.

  23. I am not a Hunger Games fan but I found this looking for another version of Cluedo. ย My daughter is a huge HG fan, and I sent her this link !! ย I love your creativity and patience. ย You are such a joy to watch. ย You could make a fortune of Etsy–yeah I know, time, time time–and supplies etc. ย Well Done @Karen Kavett
