New study reveals how less sleep can make you overweight.

Hi, Dr. Ron Hekier. Did you know that if you don’t sleep enough you may actually be changing your genetic makeup and putting yourself at risk for being overweight? That’s something I just learned while reading an article in the April 2017 edition of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. This article and study reviewed over 100,000 people in Britain and it evaluated data they had on these people’s genetic makeup and also their sleep characteristics. What they found is that people that slept for less than seven hours [per night] had an increased genetic risk for obesity. Now you may not have known that the risk for obesity actually is encoded on almost 100 separate genes and that the genetic risk for obesity can be hereditary in about 40 to 70 percent of people who are seriously overweight. So that’s a different topic but the genetic risk for obesity is increased in people who sleep less than seven hours. I think this is fascinating because what it shows is that you may have a genetic basis for obesity but you can modify it. You can change it. You can decrease it potentially by getting better sleep. So for those of you out there getting less than seven hours of sleep a night let’s increase it. You may be putting yourself at risk for obesity. This is latest news from the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition April 2017 issue We’ll have more news as I come across it I found this really interesting if you have any questions leave them in the comments below.
