Overweight and Obesity | Interesting Obesity Facts and Stats you Need to Know

Hello Viewers welcome to our Channel today dr. Dilip Gouda is with us consultant physician at varying Hospital Banjara
Hills Hyderabad hello Doctor hello doctor can you please explain what is
what basically obesity is nothing but you know there is excess of fat and I
know this particular person is beyond recommended and no wait
so BMI is something that guides us you know regarding classifying obesity so
BMI is nothing but body mass index so that’s how do you calculate BMI is
basically weight in kg by height in meters square so basically eighteen to
twenty-two point nine is what normal BMI is so BMI needs to be in this particular
range so once body mass index starts going up
meaning the weight is more for that particular height that the person has
say 23 to 25 you know WH o as classified especially Southeast Asians South Asians
as overweight and then 24 25 it is obesity now 25 to 30 is class 1 30 to 35
is class 2 and more than 35 is a class 3 obesity so these are no strict
recommendations the classification is not so strict with Caucasians the the
white people that meaning the Americans are Europe Europeans so for a fixed
height that one particular person has the weight that he should be is
different is the recommendation is different for a Southeast Asian compared
to their contemporary white no male or a female
ok now what happens when people start getting obese I know that’s a important
question because today is overweight know people are tomorrow’s you know
these people so there’s a thing called metabolic syndrome so in metabolic
syndrome there are no four to five major characteristics like increased you know
waist circumference increased blood pressure again they’re not completely
hypertensives you know their blood pressure is you know hundred and thirty
eighty-five like that and then they have glucose intolerance again they are not
diabetic but they have impaired glucose tolerance
their fasting blood sugar is more than hundred so and then they have higher
triglycerides I you know their LDL the cholesterol
levels are also the good cholesterol is you know less and bad cholesterol is
high so this is a constellation of features over called metabolic syndrome
so these are things that keep increasing especially once overweight or obesity
the nature keeps going up the severity as it increases so metabolic syndrome in
itself is a risk factor for future cardiovascular disease so someone who is
just obese not only predisposing himself for diabetes hypertension cardiovascular
disease stroke their flu has to desist and on but you know they they have these
very high risk of other diseases as well meaning they’re in fact their longevity
is also come when it comes down they have musculoskeletal problems so all
this weight that they have when say BMI goes up beyond 30 32 or not so this
weight is all you know it falls on the knees when they walk and then they get
osteoarthritis so this musculoskeletal problems this austerity early or other
it is is again very typical of obese patients so when people have these knee
joint pains and on now they tend to not walk or exercise you know walk brisk
walk or not so when they don’t walk what happens is they tend to pile on more
weight now this increases the gained weight
again falls on the knees so it’s a cycle basically one leading to other so it’s
important that we break this cycle we make sure you know weight loss occurs at
any cost no I mean exercise can be done of various types as well not just
walking so the day I can do cycling they can do swimming and other kind of
exercises they can do upper body exercises you know core strengthening
excess and all that of course diet plays a very very important role so with diet
and exercise when you are able to cut down the the white part you know they
lose weight and then they they’re able to work out more because then the knee
joint pains and all come down and then they can continue to walk and they can
make sure their weight is at a normal level obesity is something which cannot
be taken lightly because someone who has obesity is himself a direct he’s posing
a direct risk for future diabetes and like I said you know hypertension heart
problems and all that kidney problems and all so this is something you know
which is at least partially in their head they can make sure
with good lifestyle changes especially diet and exercise that they can make
sure they can cut down at least three to four cases of weight per month so make
sure that the be my goal stays you know twenty two point nine or less what kind
of diet is something which most people ask complex carbohydrate diet with no
sugar at all no simple carbohydrates high fiber and then no moderate to high
protein intake and the low fat intake so these are some general recommendations
basically so in other words in simple words like what kind of foods should
people eat to decrease obesity incidence no more of a select complex carbohydrate
foods like say whole wheat you know multigrain foods then whole wheat bread
and on soya so is a very good source interesting it’s a very good source for
plant protein and the plant fiber and and as a post animal protein so plant
plant protein is also always recommended the more than the animal protein order
fiber so again milk of all kinds of course
stone milk 2% milk and curd and then salads lots of vegetables fruits
especially if they’re unripe they’re not very sweet so this is a poor diet and of
course no oily food no sugars and no processed canned foods and no you know
high glycemic index foods like you know Italy white rice and all that so these
are about diet and exercise again it 45 minutes per day is what’s recommended
for everyone so if they can’t do forty minutes at a stretch they can do 30
minutes in the morning and 30 in the night and they evening and so there are
some medicines also available apart from lifestyle changes which will inhibit the
absorption of fat especially in that isn’t intestines
so internal lipase activity can be inhibited by an called orlistat
so that can also help to some degree to lose weight and nowadays especially for
pre diabetic patients there are some anti diabetic medicines that can be used
as well so there’s a liraglutide it is an injection glp-1 receptor agonist and
then s02 inhibitors these are the class of medicines we’re at the excess sugar
in the body he goes out through the body through urine so this class of medicines
zero to reuters glp-1 is protagonist and diet and exercise and order stat in
combination as a holistic approach you can make sure you know visitor can be
treated and the recommended amount of weight loss is usually 3 to 4 kgs for
month ok thank you so much doctor thanks for the information I hope you like this
