The Importance of Calcium

The Importance of Calcium

Dr. Kiritsis here with the GoFor20 tip of the day. today we’re going to talk a little about calcium. We all know that
calcium is essential for bone growth but that’s not quite the whole
story. I watched a recent nutrition webinar and they talked a lot about
calcium and there a couple good take home points. One is that milk may not be as
essential or as good for us as we thought. There was a harvard study that
showed that men that drank two glasses of milk a day had a significant increase
in risk of prostate cancer as opposed to not. Also galactose, it’s one of the
sugars in milk, increases the risk of ovarian cancer so there’s some real
risks that are associated with the ingestion of milk. Also, drinking milk has
not had any correlation with the prevention of fractures and actually may
increase your risk of developing fractures. We know that that strong
bones help prevent fractures so how can we get strong bones? Certainly eating
calcium in your diet along with Vitamin D and Vitamin K will help increase your
bone mineral density. Now also exercise is helpful. Impact exercises help
increase your bone mineral density. So those are some tips with regards to
calcium. The other important thing is we probably need about 600 milligrams of
calcium a day in our diets and and we should be able to get that through a
healthy diet shouldn’t need any supplements. But that’s probably a little
bit less than what we may have heard before which is anywhere from a thousand
1500 milligrams a day. That’s a little bit of an update on calcium in our diet
