Vegan Protein Powder Vs. Whey Protein?

Vegan Protein Powder Vs. Whey Protein?

Hey guys. Sean Nalewanyj here www.SeanNal.com
– www.BodyTransformationTruth.com. This picture behind me is literally a complete
coincidence but this is just sort of quick follow up here to yesterday’s video where
I talked about vegan bodybuilding diets. This question popped up in the Q&A video that I
did a while back and that question was basically just asking what my thoughts are on vegan
protein powders. There are a lot of different ones out there, a pretty good portion of them
are based on combinations of pea protein and brown rice protein but there are a lot of
other forms as well. There’s hemp, soy, quinoa, potato but in any case how do vegan
protein powders compared to whey, egg or casein and can you use them as part of your muscle
building diet. Whether it’s because you actually are a vegan or just because you get
certain negative effects when you use regular animal based protein powders. Very simple
answer here, I would say that plant based protein powders when used as part of a complete
balanced diet where you’re getting enough total daily protein in a variety of different
sources to ensure that you’re getting all of the individual amino acids that you need.
They’re completely fine to use just as a way to help you hit your protein needs for
the day. Now it is true on an individual gram for gram basis that an animal based protein
powder like whey or casein will have superior amino acid profile and a higher absorptions
rate in comparison to a plant based protein. However in the context of an overall diet
where you’re consuming enough total daily protein for your goals it’s really just
not going to matter in the bigger pictures. That’s because as long as you’re getting
enough total protein per day through a variety of different sources, you’ll already be
getting enough absorbable protein and enough of the individual amino acids that you need
to optimize muscle recovery and growth. Remember that your body can only use and your body
only needs a limited amount of protein over any given period and consuming more protein
and more amino acids than your body can actually utilize that’s not going to somehow boost
your results further. If you take a look the research that is available on protein intake
for athletes and bodybuilders, and I will link some references in the description box
below. The required numbers are actually a lot lower than most people think. Like I mention
in that last video, 0.8 grams per pound of body weight daily will be enough for most
people. If vegan wants to be fully on the safe side, since plant based protein are less
absorbable then they could increase that to 0.9 grams or one gram just sort of as a cautionary
thing, but almost certainly there’s no scenario where more than one gram per pound of body
weight would be needed. I mean if there was some bizarre scenario where you could only
consume, say 50 grams of protein per day and you had to make the absolute best of that,
then in that case whey, egg or casein would be the better choice. But if we’re talking
about a normal standard bodybuilding diet where you’re getting enough, a sufficient
amount of overall daily protein then a vegan protein powder is completely fine to use for
whatever you reasons might be. You can easily find reasonably priced vegan protein powders
that will give you just as much protein per scoop as whey. I’ve actually experimented
with a few different ones lately just to see what they’re like and I found that when
I blend them up with my smoothies, with fruit, veggies, oats, nuts, butters and whatever
else they taste just as good too. So not much else to say on that. Vegan protein powders
are totally fine to use. So thank for watching guys. The official website is www.SeanNal.com.

  1. Nice points you cover Sean! Question. Can you make a video on muscle confusion if you haven't already? I've heard many article and forms where it is a myth and others saying it good. Thanks and much support!

  2. you forgot to mention they taste like ASS when consumed just with water, and most of them are hella overpriced for what they are.

  3. Great video. I've recently switched over to a pea/rice based protein powder myself. I simply cannot handle whey anymore since it irritates my stomach and leaves me feeling bloated.

  4. I bought a vegan protein powder. Most disgusting thing i've ever tasted my whole life. Vega was the brand, vanilla flavor.

  5. Yeah absorption rate.. 75% of people are intolerant to milk. And hemp protein has a complete amino acid profile. Absolutely no advantage in using animal protein (considering also the correlations with certain cancers) compared to veg ones considering the environmental impact of it

  6. Hey Sean, what are your thoughts on this article: http://www.veganhealth.org/articles/weightlifting#protein ? According to it, the protein needs of most vegan bodybuilders are somewhere between .8 and 1.5 g/kg (.36 and .68 g/lb) of body weight.

  7. I know what you are saying. Protein powders don't even seem like they make a difference since I'm having protein from so many different sources and so many different meals. Sometimes it makes me wonder if the powder is effective at all or am I just wasting my money. There is no way to know! Some people say that protein in powdered form isn't effective, some say it is if it's not spiked etc. How can one possibly find out? Only way I can think of is simply remove protein powder from my diet keeping everything else constant for a few months to see the difference if any at all and that feels like too much of a gamble. Plus making gains could depend on so many factors. Any thots?

  8. If a plant product has for example 20g of protein per 100g, can the human body utilize all of that protein? I always thought that is the only case with meat and dairy protein

  9. Solid video. Just a note that soy-only protein supplements will probably fade out due to lower strength gains, despite the absorption rate comparable to whey.

  10. I still may not fully understand the absorption rates. If the body can only absorb soy protein at a rate of 4.9g/hour, by my caculations, that's a maximum of 117.6g in 24 hours, which wouldn't be enough for most people and most plant based proteins absorb even more slowly, like 2-3g/hour. I'm assuming taking two or more types of protein doesn't have a cumulative effect, i.e. 4.9g of soy plus 3g of another plant sourced protein, so I don't see how you would get enough protein actually absorbed.

  11. i am 15 years old and ive been working out for 5 months and i am seeing a good results but the truth is i am not using any supplement because i am seeing results i would only use weight gainer if i stopped seeing results , is it good what i am doing or what?

  12. hey Sean I started training 2 body parts a day on a 3 day on & 1 day off split…but I can see that I have elevated or irregular heartbeat I'm currently doing 4 variations for both body parts for 4 sets what should I do ?

  13. +Sean Nalewanyj Sorry man if I offended you. Been watching your channel for quite some time now so I know for a fact you're a cool guy. I deleted my previous comment as I don't want people to make the wrong impression of you. Alrightpeaceoutbye

  14. I'm starting a green smoothie cleanse for its overall health benefits plus weight loss. Will adding vegan protein aid in or hinder weight loss?

  15. The real ration of protein per day is as you said 0.8 grams but compare to your weitght in kilograms
If i Weight 65 kg mine would be 52g per day. It can increase to 1g,1.5, 2 or even 2.5 depending of our level of exercise per day.

  16. fukin fake!!! vegan protein…I mean plant protein like spirulina or pea are gettin absorbed faster than the rest of fake plastic proteins

  17. I use myvega protein never looked back since! My stomach can't handle whey proteins. Like with everything else when they change the formulaic content to make it cheaper to mass produce it sucks.

  18. Whey makes me terribly tired so I'm dropping it. I'm considering pea or hemp, but my rice intake Is probably already too high as I've read brown rice contains much cadmium.

Is there anything to consider with sourcing pea protein? Like is there certain states or countries that source healthier and higher quality products? Or do peas tend to uptake certain metals at a high rate?

  19. I went to pea protein because every other animal based protein had gluten and my chest doesn't respond well to it and I get acne on my face. I'm trying out pea for a while and hope I see the results I want 😬

  20. Basically different proteins have different amino acid profile there is no bad or good protein. If you take out the beef protein (which is gelatin btw) and has the worst amino acid profile with almost NO tryptophan and some other important aminos, any protein is fine.Soy protein has been shown to increase igf1 higher that whey also (thats one of the reasons of the bone protective nature of soy) and maybe cause of the higher glutamine, lysine, arginine content.Soy and pea especially are really solid, casein is not a good choise in general, whey is better for people who consume animal proteins.Nice video dude.

  21. I hate the supplement industry.full of lies and biased studies to sell more product. in five years theyll be saying 3grams of protein/lb..lol

  22. have you heard of moringa? so i was thinking of using soybean milk
powder and moringa powder or just soybean milk powder to gain more while
i work out from home. your swift response will be appreicated. thanks

  23. So any ideas on a good brand for pea protein? I was originally taking ON gold standard whey protein and had great results but it made my acne so much worse, now I am currently trying to bulk but can get more than 150g of protein in my meals I need to boost it up to 190 and need a protein supplements replacement for whey, I was in between rice and pea since soy lowers your testosterone. I decided to go with pea first but no idea on the brand? Any suggestions

  24. Why use whey and other animal Gmo Protiens? The body doesnt digest it good period.
Even if your not vegan Long term pea protien Is much safer and better.

  25. Veganism is a misguided human notion even though it's built upon noble ideas however humans are opportunistic omnivores. And before anybody accuse me that I haven't tried I tried both veganism and vegetarianism and I did feel like shit so there you have it one size doesn't fit all.

  26. Thanks, Sean. This was an awesome video. I used to take whey based mass gainer but I suffered bad skin, stomach and kidney pains. So I didn't take any supplements for about six months with decent gains through diet. But I recently found pea protein (all vegan) and just ordered a bin. Very eager to use is post workouts.

  27. Great video! Thank you for mentioning the importance of maintaining a balanced diet while supplementing with vegan protein powders. I'm always surprised with clients seem to forget that element.

  28. Hi there I am a Flavon Max (award winning, plant based supplement) distributor, if you want to earn money from home, while just chatting to people, please get in touch with me. Great commissions, flexible hours, free trainings, excellent teamwork! https://www.facebook.com/groups/FlavonteamLondon/?ref=aymt_homepage_panel

  29. We as humans are sensitive to dairy 🥛 some of us have a somewhat, tolerance towards dairy but it's not a natural product we should be eating, drinking milk is for babies to grow cows, humans, and all female animals develop milk 🍼 due to pregnancy 🤰 idk why people are this retarded to think it's healthy to drink milk from a other species….

  30. I recently stopped being stupid (A Vegan) after about 10 years. I can tell you with 100% certainty that Animal based proteins are much, much more effective than plant based proteins (not to mention all the other health benefits of eating meat!). I've been working out for about 2 years and I was pathetically weak. I tracked my macros, got all the things I was supposed to be getting and I still wasn't getting stronger.

After a lot of consideration, I started eating animal products again (Mostly eggs, ground turkey and some cheese). I immediately found I had more energy, slept better than I have in years and My lifts have increased to the extent that I feel like I'm on steroids. It's like I've got noob gains all over again, but they weren't this good the first time (when I was a vegan)! I am now convinced that You just can't get strong on a vegan diet. If you think you are strong as a vegan, try eating meat again (as part of a healthy diet) and I guarantee you will get a lot stronger. Besides the whole strength thing, there are a lot of other negative side effects to eating meat. I honestly haven't felt this good in a whole lot of years.

  31. I use Sunwarrior natural protein powder with Silk protein almond milk, banana, raw cacao powder, cinnamon, flax seed, spinach and mix it all in a blender. Super delicious, nutritious, and goes down nicely. All natural, vegan, and non gmo. Sometimes I'll put peanut butter instead of flax seed. All together I get about 35-40g of protein out of 1 smoothie along with tons of other nutrients on top it.

  32. Check out Clean Green Protein with Lentein. Lentein is a fresh water plant that is:
Higher in Essential Amino Acids and BCAA's than any other plant known including Pea, Hemp, Rice or even Soy.
Higher in Nutrient Density than any other plant known – more than Kale, Spinach, Spirulina, Chlorella or even Moringa.
    1 serving contains 40%DV Omega 3, 35%DV Iron, 22%Dv Calcium, 28%DV Fiber and 190% DV Vitamin A.
With an AAS of 1.04 (whey is 1.06) it is the first plant comparable to Whey.
Digestibility – PDCAAS of 0.93, plus we add ProHydrolase enzyme making it nearly completely bioavailable.
Clean Machine is the first and only company in the world to have Lentein.

Sean – Let me know if you would like to try it or review it, I would be happy to send you some.

  33. i don't have the slightest problem to digest whey but considering the cost of a high quality whey that you are sure the cows are feed with grass and not all kind of shit, i prefer to buy high quality vegetable protein who are realy cheaper

  34. So does the protein from shakes count towards total protein just as much as food proteins? I always heard from food is better. Is this true?

  35. Only reason I use brown rice protein rather than whey because I get acne outbreaks from dairy products like cheese, milk and yoghurt etc… so this stopped my acne outbreaks

  36. I get plenty of red meat and I think just eating carrots and beans and tomotoes ect. isnt very varied so plant protein helps me with my health.

  37. Only concern is the heavy metal toxicity found in most commercial plant-based protein powders. Check out www.cleanlabelproject.com to see.

  38. I’m using Planta by ambrosia the “Banana french Maple Toast” flavor and it tastes okay lmao. I simply could not digest whey protein 😞. Even with lactase I was bloated as fuck.

  39. I have seen the amino acid profile of pea protein and it is almost identical to whey protein with the exception of it being a little low in l methionine (which you can get from other foods). Due to severe stress I have become allergic to dairy (casien and whey are both problematic for me) so pea protein is my best alternative.

  40. As the protein powders are all the same, then best get the vegan ones because they are ethical, other protein powders are supporting animal cruelty and it is just for building muscle.

  41. Saun i cant beleive that u failed to warn people about the taste of vegan protein powder. Its ok aaying that vegan protein powder is just as good as whey but if you cant get it down your neck then its irrelivant

Truth is this stuff tastes absolutely vile, ghastly, disgusting etc…… its just not drinkable

The only way its drinkable is if u jam pack your blender full of almond milk berry or cocoa powder banana blueberrys peanut butter honey cinamin etc……. . And thats providing that you only use 15 grams of the protein powder (cos any more than that will be impossible to disguise the taste). Problem is that 15 grams powder will only get you 12 grams of protein. Is really worth using all that milk pb honey cinamin etc….. just to mask the taste for a meesly 12 grams of protein

Bottom line is this : vegan protein powder may be as good as whey but its just not realistic to drink cos of the vile taste. Plain n simple as that
